For over forty years, Keith Payne VC AM has been a tireless advocate for veterans’ rights and welfare.

Born in Queensland, Australia, in 1933, Keith originally trained as a cabinetmaker before joining the Army in 1951. Over the next 20 years, his career would take him across the globe to posts in Korea, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea. During this time, Keith also married his wife, Florence, and together they raised five sons.

In February 1969, Keith joined the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV). AATTV was a specialist unit of military advisors that provided training and assistance to Vietnamese soldiers.

In May of the same year, Keith was responsible for rescuing 40 wounded and stranded soldiers, which he managed under heavy gunfire while also suffering wounds to his hands and arms.

This remarkable demonstration of bravery and leadership earned Keith the Victoria Cross. It was presented to him by Queen Elizabeth II in 1970.

Keith retired from the Army in 1975 a decorated and respected soldier. Since then, he has been an active pillar of the veteran community, fundraising for and counselling those experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder. KPVCVBG is the culmination of his decades-long efforts to support veterans and was established to carry on his impressive legacy.
